Jets rookie tight end Chris Herndon was arrested for DWI last weekend, which makes him the second Jets player arrested for driving while intoxicated this offseason and the fourth player from the team to be arrested in the last 13 months.

Maybe a trainer tells a clocker, after his horse works a lightning five furlongs, to shave a few tenths of a second off the recorded time or add a few to the real numbers and someone else hears it.

The information can be either good or bad, but somebody is going to use it. Of such a risky foundation is a wise guy horse of the week born.

It happens before every big race. It is wrong more often than right, but occasionally someone who hears it and verifies it, makes a score. But not often.

One year that title fell to a horse owned by George Steinbrenner at the Kentucky Derby — a horse who ran so badly that he damned near had to be pushed across the finish line. It is an idea generally born more of hope than fact. But you can’t judge what it really meant until you have actually seen the race.

Although he wasn’t a star in college at Clemson, 49ers coach Bill Walsh saw something in Clark and selected him in the 10th round of the 1979 NFL draft. After playing sparingly as a rookie, Clark burst onto the scene in 1980, finishing third in the NFL with 82 catches.

And then in the 1981 season, Clark was even better, culminating in the NFC Championship Game, when, with the 49ers trailing the Cowboys 27-21 in the final minute, Joe Montana lobbed a high pass into the back of the end zone, where Clark leapt into the air and caught it for the touchdown that would send the 49ers to the Super Bowl. That play has been dubbed The Catch, and remains among the great plays in NFL history.

Clark retired after the 1987 season, and worked in football operations, both Cheap Elite Nike NFL Jerseys with the 49ers and with the Browns. Three weeks ago in Louisville, the wonder colt, Justify, was a pre-Derby winner by acclamation. He was so impressive that even the naming of a wise guy horse made little impact. The horse was Hofburg. He finished seventh over an horrendous mix of water and mud that turned the Churchill Downs track into an equine nightmare.

The only thing we learned that day was that Justify is an amazing race horse and that wise guys can’t come in out of the rain.
